A Conversation with Kristopher McNeill

چکیده
Why are you trying to anticipate contamination that does not yet exist? The standard paradigm of environmental chemistry is that we chase the effect of a chemical in the environment, so there’s a lag between discovering a problem and then 10 years later developing a solution. In the 1970s and 1980s, the targets were pesticides, then chlorinated solvents in the 1990s. And in the 2000s, people focused on pharmaceuticals, and then nanomaterials. It’s driven in part by funding or regulatory agencies: The Environmental Protection Agency gets interested in pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and then suddenly there are 20 groups working on it. It’s like the molecule-of-the-month club. I’m interested in solving problems for the future. I was a synthetic organometallic chemist for a long time, and no one who works in a lab can ignore that there are some pretty toxic compounds. When you’re filling up your waste bottle, it’s like a cauldron of poison. I wanted to use chemistry to lessen the impact of humans on the planet.

2,4-Dichlorobenzoic acid and a suite of models of chlorinated biphenyl carboxylic acids were found to be efficient sensitizers of the reactive oxygen species singlet oxygen (1O2).

Dechlorination reactions at sp(2) C-Cl bonds by a pentaphosphino zero-valent iron (ZVI) complex are proposed to follow an oxidative addition, β-Cl-elimination pathway en route to iron-chloride, iron-hydride and iron-acetylide products, the distribution being dependent on the nature of alkyne produced.
متن کامل1.1 Conversation: the Most Natural Means of Communication
Conversation is the most natural and popular means for people to communicate with each other. Conversation is everywhere around us, and even though you may feel that making conversation is relatively effortless, a closer look shows that a tremendous amount of sophisticated interaction is involved in initiating and sustaining conversation. Figure 1.1 illustrates a normal conversation scene in ou...
متن کاملVocabulary Lists for EAP and Conversation Students
Despite the abundance of research investigating general and academic vocabularies and developing dozens of word lists, few studies have compared academic vocabulary with general service word lists such as conversation vocabulary. Many EAP researchers assume that university students need to know all the words in West’s (1953) General Service List (GSL) as a prerequisite to academic words (e.g., ...
